KERRI CHANDLER - Heaven Ep - Madhouse Records

Kerri Chandler offers up a remix EP from Bristol based producers Behling & Simpson this August, entitled ‘Heaven’ and set to drop via Kerri’s very own Madhouse Records imprint.

Madhouse Records boss Kerri Chandler needs no introduction having been one of the most prominent names in underground house music for over two decades now. While rising talents Behling & Simpson’s collective output has been championed by the likes of Claude von Stroke, Derrick Carter, Ralph Lawson, Modeselektor and many more over the pairs 100+ previous releases between them (under various guises), this stands as testament to their undeniable ability to craft forward-thinking electronic music.
First up on the release we have ‘Heaven’ featuring Christopher McCray on vocal duties, Behling & Simpson’s prevalent low-slung, dropped tempo rhythms take the lead, alongside hypnotic low-end tones, while the duo capture Chandler’s warm musicality with style utilizing the original’s bright chord progressions and smooth vocal licks, creating an intricate, intelligent slice of house.
‘Peace Of My Mind’ follows on the flip side, a track originally released on Madhouse in 2011, though returning to the label in 2014 with an intriguing reshape courtesy of the Behling & Simpson, again taking on the pair’s niche slo-mo feel, setting the tone and radiantly showcasing why their sound stands tall above many of their contemporaries in such an effortlessly cool way.

A Single String

So I'm light years away from being a specialist on the string theory but the idea of having everything and everyone interconnected by vibrations appeals to the imagination of the musician (and the dirty hippie) in me. Sharing a sunrise on a terrace or a hot and sweaty night in a club is all about this vibration. "A single string" is dedicated to that feeling, the one that makes you think : "wow, we're all in this together". It rolls, it bounces, and that synth line will hopefully make your little fingers reach up for the stars, and strings.

Keys for Hanuman

This one will be a personal mystery until the day I die. Last fall I returned from an Asia tour to work on some new music in the studio, at first I did as always after a hiatus in production and listened to the last stuff I was working on before I left. And though I have a relatively organized numbering system and decent memory (which may be on the downhill now due to mileage), I had no recollection whatsoever about starting, recording, or even thinking about this tune, at the time titled "Keys For Me". Regardless, it hits the spot just right as I had been thinking about coming back to this sound I used to love years back - more relaxed and stripped down, more hypnotic. Every artist channels inspiration in their own way, and sometimes it rains on you from unknown places. This song is dedicated to Hanuman, the Monkey God, faithful protector of Rama. And by the way, Hanuman also appears on the great cover artwork by Léo "Peanut" Butler.

Winning all the Battles (But Still Losing the War)

I remember a time when we all wanted was to be heard. It seems to me that this time has surely come, but somehow along the way, we may have lost some pieces of the core values that gave us our stride. Time to go back to the essential? Refocus our act? Step out of the limelight and dive deep into the stuffy, obscure, low-ceiling groove box? Maybe so. Winning while losing? Maybe no.

FRANCIS HARRIS - Minutes Of Sleep - Scissor and Thread

On "Minutes of Sleep," Scissor and Thread label founder Francis Harris continues to grapple with the subjects of memory, loss and profound grief that suffused his critically acclaimed debut "Leland" (2012), an album length requiem composed for his father. Writing this time in tribute to his mother who sadly passed the following year, Harris revisits deeply personal territory on "Minutes of Sleep" with newfound perspective, heightened confidence and a markedly refined approach, yielding a noticeably matured and eloquent statement which transcends sorrowful brooding and rumination. It was through recording "Leland" that Harris first broke from his decade long preoccupation with solitary electronic music production. Seeking to infuse his formal compositions with emotional content, Harris employed the singular talents of Danish vocalist Gry Bagøien, trumpeter Greg Paulus (No Regular Play) and cellist Emil Abramyan, each of whom provided truly inspiring passages throughout that album. All three return on "Minutes of Sleep" along with Léah Lazonick on piano, session player Brendan Golle on keys and Harris' childhood mate Gabe Hedrick on guitar. Harris even contributed to the sessions himself with some solid guitar and piano work, evidencing the direction his career has taken since the release of "Leland" and that project's rekindling of his passion for instrumentation, collaboration and performance. Despite the familiar presence of Bagøien's uniquely childlike blues delivery, Paulus' heartbreakingly august trumpet or Abramyan's plaintiff cello, it is the conceptual basis of Harris' songwriting and his emphasis on painstaking production processes that impart "Minutes of Sleep" with structural integrity and aesthetic continuity. Across the ten song opus, Harris works organic and synthetic elements into his compositional framework, relying less than ever on percussive elements to define his moods whilst solidifying his signature blend of house, modern classical, shoe-gaze and noise. Working with engineer Bill Skibbe at the famed Keyclub Recordings on Sly Stone's original Flickinger console, Harris drenches the tracks in analogue effects, adding tape saturation for good measure by running the final mix through a vintage multi-track. The result is a constantly warm yet intense, almost tangible sonic atmosphere that rises and falls subtly like breath with the pacing of the music.

JEROME - CGI002 - CGI Records

Having devoted the better part of two decades tearing apart music from every conceivable angle and putting it back together as only he can, the wanderer also known as JEROME releases his debut EP with CGI Records. Not much is known about this lazy magnet but his sound is indeed magnetic. JEROME has constructed some of the tuffest house abstractions using only what will fit in the backseat of his '81 Rabbit. Huge round bass lines ground the unrestrained dubby house experiments happening around it. By capturing an improvised performance, we are gifted a hypnotic and moving dancefloor experience that only occurs in the heat of the moment. Massive 20+ minute live takes were sent to CGI Records HQ, edited down and the two most powerful cuts were chosen for pressing on this special limited edition hand-stamped white label.

NINA KRAVIZ - MR Jones - Rekids

Nina Kraviz returns to Rekids with her first release of original material since 2012's self-titled debut album. The Mr Jones EP sees her unveiling material originally made in 2008 - presented on the digital release in original and updated 2013 versions - alongside brand new productions and a collaboration with Detroit's Luke Hess, offering a great way to hear how the the producer's music has evolved over time. The Mr Jones EP features some of my very first tracks and brand new ones: 'Mr Jones' is about a person who is always looking for truth around him and brave enough to always say what he thinks - it was originally made in Moscow in 2008, which I revisited this year and now releasing as both a new 2013 version, with the untouched 2008 version featured on the digital release known as the 'Home Listening Mix', for which I think it is better suited. It was made by a combination of my vocals recorded in real time over a few takes, which then went through different FX, tones and machines to create a kind of voodoo feeling that was unique to the very special Moscow morning on which it was recorded.
'Sheer' is one of my first approaches to making a techno track in 2008. All the vocals featured are my own - I made a few different mixdowns of the track, one of which is available on the digital release with a different structure and mastering. 'Black White' is another earlier track: a stranger-sounding one I began making in a Miami hotel room some time ago - maybe some of that scenario has made it into the track... 'Desire' and 'Remember' are brand new tracks: 'Desire' was freshly made in my Berlin studio one month ago, while 'Remember' is my collaboration with Luke Hess, produced and recorded by us both in Luke's Detroit studio earlier this year, where I convinced him to get on the mic too - it's inspired by a very old poem and about very deep true feelings of one person to another, and a moment when one suddenly forgets the other...

WILL BERRIDGE - Make a Move Ep - Save You Records

A quanto pare il nome Will Berridge, in questa uscita su Save You Records, rappresenta potenza, forte carica espressiva, travolgente ripetizione dei 4/4 in quello che non pare un lavoro meditato ma un immediato prodotto dell’istinto. Mi riferisco in particolare alla traccia che apre questa release, "Make a Move": il pezzo è lì, l’impressione immediata è la traccia stessa. Tratto identificativo, nonché la forza di questa musica, è il fatto di essere immediata espressione di uno stato d’animo, senza grandi studi o riflessioni precedenti; d’altra parte il fine ultimo è chiaro, tanto semplice quanto evidente: fare del movimento, lo dice il titolo dell' intero Ep. Una traccia che si risolve nel momento in cui è ascoltata o ballata. Elementare la struttura, quanto i suoni: il sintetizzatore in primo luogo fa la traccia intera, poi una batteria riverberata e la cassa distorta. Complessivamente house / techno che suscita ricordi e rimembranze più precise, spesso berlinesi, a causa dell’echo del synth sincopato: particolarmente evidente, se volete testare empiricamente tutto questo, nel secondo original, "Metal Works". Questo Ep è l’esempio che per "far muovere" non servono i sofismi o la presunzione di fare una musica d’arte, serve semplicità, qualità della "materia prima" (i suoni) con cui si costruiscono i lavori e capacità di scaldare tale materia prima per trasmettere un’emozione, per "far muovere".

CTEPEO 57 - The Missouri Breaks Ep - Tartelet Records

Grezzo, caldo, analogico, lievemente distorto questo CTEPEO '57 su Tartelet Records: in prima istanza funk (quantomeno "The Missouri Breaks") e in secondo luogo jazz/soul ("Sputnik I"), la traccia centrale molto più house. Il vecchio caro e tanto amato funk, del quale non riusciamo proprio a liberarci e dal quale continuiamo a trarre grandi ispirazioni per continuare oggi a fare ballare un gruppo di persone che si trovano di fronte ad una consolle. Tutto parte da lì: il Funk. Non sarà un caso che a chi piace la house (quella vera) piaccia anche sua eminenza James Brown. Ecco, la release in questione su Tartelet Records rappresenta uno dei tanti recuperi di frammenti di vissuto funk e jazz, ma con consapevolezza e grande qualità: si sente subito, basta sentire il timbro per qualche secondo, funziona bene. Buoni i campioni in "Sputnik I", tracce croccanti le rimanenti che stimolano immediatamente e valorizzano quella cosa chiamata "groove" che ormai, tra loop triti e ritriti, sembra davvero sepolta nel dimenticatoio e annichilita dall’omologazione che avanza imperterrita.

VOLTA CAB - I Cannot Sleep - Voyeurhythm Records

Konstantyn Isaev aka Volta Cab: questa volta mi capita tra le mani lui con il suo "I cannot Sleep", Ep quattro tracce uscito su Voyeurhythm. 

Durante la fase di ricerca che precede la recensione, come sempre, cerco di documentarmi al meglio ricercando più informazioni possibili venendo a conoscenza di un personaggio ambizioso: giovane producer ucraino d'istanza in quel di Dnipropetrovsk,  cita come "maestri", od a dirla in inglese "Influences",  nomi come Chez Damier, Motor City Drum Ensemble, Underground Resistance. Ah, Nobili intenti!

Del resto il richiamo a connotati per così dire "classici" è chiaro sintomo (inconsapevole o consapevole, dipende) di imitazione / emulazione, basta ascoltare quest'ep per farsene un idea.

"I Cannot Sleep", title track dell'uscita, è un esercizio stilistico di "Warehouse music" diametralmente opposto a "Jamelia", house track dalla spiccata influenza 90's, eppure il flow carico di basse frequenze e riverberi che mira al cuore del dancefloor sembra invece avvicinarle ed accomunarle in contrapposizione al B-side "I remember", inno alla deep house carico di groove che sembra appunto rievocare tempi in cui si poteva davvero dire "House is a feeling", della serie "anche l'house music aveva un anima".

Ecco, dalla conclusione di quest'ultimo periodo occorre però far partire una riflessione, sincera e spassionata: ammettiamolo almeno a noi stessi, il genere è palesemente di fronte ad un bivio che vede, a questo punto per forza, contrapposti lo spirito di emulazione / ispirazione sopracitato (anche dallo stesso Volta Cab) e la voglia di fare qualcosa di nuovo, qualcosa che possa ridare forza a quella spinta propulsiva che ha di fatto permesso all'house music di arrivare in poco più di 20 anni in ogni angolo del pianeta.

 Forse è questo il grande limite dell'house del nostro tempo: stiamo parlando di una musica che al giorno d’oggi sta chiudendo il proprio orizzonte espressivo mettendo delle mura e dei paletti all’interno dei quali rimanere; stiamo parlando di una musica che ormai da più di vent’anni ha nella sua struttura portante il battito costante e un loop di 4/4 che incalza e si ripete.

Ecco, oggi navighiamo nel passato remoto della house a causa dell’impoverimento estetico che questa musica ha ricevuto e sta ricevendo: bisogna lodare i maestri ed avere poi la forza di andare oltre, aprire con il proprio lavoro nuovi orizzonti espressivi; condizione necessaria per il progresso stilistico, per l’evoluzione.

Volta cab su Voyeurhytm, insomma, decide per questa volta (forse per via della giovane età) di non fare "la scelta" con il risultato di consegnarci un ep solido, buono per il dancefloor ma sicuramente non "d'impatto".

Come spesso accade, informazioni centellinate al massimo in merito alle uscite targate Karlovak. La label svedese preferisce infatti, alle (tante) parole, il sound rotolante di Mr. Tophat & Art Alfie.
“Ledlined Handbag” è un chiaro esempio di tool house music vecchia maniera appositamente rivisitato per i giorni nostri: cassa e basso che spingono in sincrono con l’unico obiettivo di togliere il respiro agli “abitanti” del dancefloor.

MARVIN AND GUY - Estacy Ep - On The Prowl

Il concetto è semplice: per muoversi non c'è bisogno di "musica d'arte" complessa, alle volte è sufficiente un loop funk con una cassa potente in 4/4. 

Lo hanno capito bene Marvin Dan III° & Lee "The Black Belt" Guy, che ci presentano questo Ep definibile a mio parere con una sola parola: House.
Si tratta del principio che sta alla base di un certo tipo di House music, la House dei campioni funk e soul, quella di Todd Terry, quella di Dj Sneak; Marvin & Guy ci mettono di fronte a tutto questo. Sembra poi che per qualche momento  l’Ep cambi leggermente direzione: pare di avvicinarsi ad una sfera di riflessione più introspettiva con il "Cabral's Bottom mix" dell’A1 Estacy, ma con "Moon Import" e "Shot Me" si ritorna immediatamente al caldo suono deep House, nero, funky, americano insomma.

TRISTESSE CONTEMPORAINE - Woodwork Ep - Record Makers

Un trio senza confini che raccoglie il talento tra Giappone, Gran Bretagna e Svezia e che di base opera a Parigi. Tristesse Contemporaine realizzano il loro primo album omonimo nel 2012, prodotto e mixato da Pilooski, e ottengono da subito gli elogi della critica e della scena musicale internazionale per un lavoro grezzo e minimale ma allo stesso tempo orecchiabile ed affascinante.
Questo terzo episodio della loro storia è un Ep ispirato a fantasmi shoegaze e krautrock che caratterizza la band, la colonna sonora di un' epoca che si è persa nel tempo tra new wave, synth pop e house music.

GLIMPSE - True South Ep - Aus Music

Glimpse non ha bisogno di presentazioni. Da dieci anni a questa parte si muove con naturalezza tra le svariate sfumature di house e techno.
Questo nuovo EP su AUS Music punta dritto alla pista con un’infilata di pezzi belli spessi come “Whiles”, “True South” e il "South Soul Project Rmx" per non farci mancare una spruzzata di bass music, che va per la maggiore di questi ultimi tempi.

RICK WADE - With Me - Little Angel Records

Alla Leggenda l'Atto riesce tanto semplice quanto sconvolgente, rivoluzionario per il mondo ma non per lui  che vive i suoi gesti con la naturalezza ovvia di chi li pensa e poi li fa. Un esempio calzante di tutto questo è Rick Wade, la storia parla chiaro.
Nato nei pressi di Chicago, a meno di un'ora da quel Southside culla della musica nera dagli anni 50 in poi, studia all'University of Michigan a Detroit e condivide la consolle del Nectarine Ballroom con un certo Jeff "The Wizard" Mills. Eventi e situazioni differenti accomunate evidentemente da un vicino destino: così come Mills "Il Mago" diventa "l'Alieno" inventando la Techno, anche Wade diventa il Re di un genere, la Deep House, di cui praticamente si fa primo promotore culturale sia ai party che alla radio, attraverso il suo famosissimo dance show radiofonico del sabato sera "Journey to the Land Of House" andato per anni in onda sulla WCBN di Detroit.

ED DAVENPORT presents: INLAND - Solstice EP - Counterchange Recordings

Ed Davenport è un produttore inglese ma di base a Berlino che, dopo l'album di debutto rilasciato nel 2012 su NRK, lancia la sua etichetta Counterchange Recordings con questa release prevista in uscita per la fine di aprile 2013.
Ed presenta "Inland" "Solstice Ep", un progetto audace e poliedrico che spazia tra techno, house ed elettronica passando attraverso paesaggi ricchi di forti sfumature affascinanti e fresche per poi ributtarsi velocemente in zone più scure ed istituzionali.
Un inno alla scena techno londinese ed un fresco e luccicante monumento al clubbing europeo.

OMAR S - Thank You For Letting Me Be Myself - FXHE Records

Alex "Omar" Smith è il re indiscusso della scena House mondiale.
L'uomo di Detroit continua a seguire la sua vocazione di messaggero della musica e ringrazia tutti i suoi discepoli con "Thank You For Letting Me Be Myself" ovviamente sulla sua etichetta FXHE Records.
Il buon Omar omaggia il suo pubblico con un lavoro sporco ma sofisticato, ruvido,  melodico e ricco di drum programming sostenuto da bassline micidiali ed avvologenti. Un inno alla musica, alla sua musica, che riempie il cuore ad ogni ascolto e ci consuma le suole delle scarpe sotto il ritmo incessante del suo battito.

Leo Mas è protagonista e testimone della nascita di Ibiza come Capitale Mondiale del Clubbing, perché è al fianco di Dj Alfredo all’Amnesia dal 1985 al 1988 ( Summer of Love ) e nel 1990 senza Alfredo ( Dj al Pacha ). L’Amnesia è il Club che nel 1987 ha cambiato la scena europea e poi mondiale dei Club, grazie anche al supporto dei Dj Londinesi Trevor Funk, Paul Oakenfold, Danny Rampling, Nick Halloway, Johnny Walker che per la prima volta vennero all’Amnesia di quel anno, al tempo era ancora un open air nightclub, il gruppo fu sorpreso dallo stile unico ed eclettico di Alfredo e Leo che suonavano la nuova House Music esportata dagli USA e un mix di generi chiamata poi Balearic Beat.
