THE EMPEROR MACHINE - Like a Machine - Southern Fried Records

Following on from two hugely well received EPs on Southern Fried Records in 2013, the imprint is to release the highly anticipated, next full length offering from electronic explorer, Andy Meecham AKA The Emperor Machine.
Since his last LP as The Emperor Machine, ‘Space Beyond The Egg’, Meecham has been busy on plenty of other essential projects: as well as appearing on the Boiler Room, the so called ‘King of the Weirdigans’ has worked with Erol Alkan (on the Future Four project released on Phantasy Sound) and disco king Todd Terje (Todd programmed the System 700 on the ‘So.Ma.So’ track on the LP) and has been remixed by both Andrew Weatherall and Ewan Pearson.
Meecham however makes it clear that albums are still where his heart is at, as he looks to the release of his fourth LP, “I prefer to make albums as The Emperor Machine. I like to go a bit weirder, which I think you can on an album. I've hooked up with a vocalist on this record and it’s brought another dimension to the sound.” That added dimension brings a further layer of emotion with an LP that balances beautifully constructed songs with Meecham’s much loved electronic audio manipulation.
The album, complete with stunning original art work, kicks off with the fizzing, dirty and indie leaning sonics of ‘Theme From Magical Ring’ which is captivating from the off. Dramatic and epic in equal measure, the album goes on to include a punky, tortured version of the previously released single/title track before sinking into a dubbed out, guitar licked disco groove awash with shimmering synths and Studio 54 dazzle.
Meecham proves his exceptional range throughout the album thanks to tracks like the kicking, vocal led punk-funk-disco jam that is ‘Voices’, the sexy, sultry groove of ‘Pop The Lid’ and insular, broken beat stumbles of the echo drenched ‘Let The Bombs Fall’ with its richly harmonic vocal refrains and acid twitches.
This is another hugely textured, dynamic and multi-layered ride into the psychedelic sound world of The Emperor Machine that might just be his most complete work yet. With a new live show, a single forthcoming featuring Erol Alkan on remix duties and a special limited vinyl version of the album being released for Record Store Day (plus a deluxe version featuring a previously unreleased album called 'Return Of The Egg') there is much to look forward to from The Emperor Machine.

DANIELE BALDELLI & DJ ROCCA - Podalirius Remixes Vol 1 - Nang Records

Off the back of their sold out album, Daniele Baldelli & DJ Rocca are set to release a limited run 12" featuring remixes of the highest order. 'Complotto Geometrico', 'Space Scribble' & 'A TV Show' are the tracks of choice, remixed by none other than Andrew Weatherall, PrinsThomas and Luke Solomon respectively. The Weatherall remix initiates with a gentle bounce. The synth lines begin to peak and trough whilst back-drafted guitar riffs ring home around the affected vocal sample that oozes in. A subtle cybernetic atmosphere builds around the melodic rhythm which in turn ebbs and flows through out. It’s seeping with that Weatherall magic, making it perfect for any time of night. After his previous collaborations with Lindstrom et. al. we we're very excited to see what Prins Thomas would conjure up for this remix. Cosmic energy instantly emanates from the mix, giving a lighter vibe to the melodic depth that the Weatherall mix delivered. It boasts slightly more acidic elements that switch the dancefloor mentality from 'steady groover' to 'floor-mover.' To finish, Luke Solomon provides a weirdo-disco rendition, full of elastic synth work, a bumping house groove and plenty of raw soul. Probably the more energetic of the three, Solomon proves that he deserves his place as Disco House royalty.

KIWI - The Guanako Haka Ep - Days Of Being Wild

Residente nel sud di Londra, Alex Warren in arte "Kiwi" ha creato un sound tutto suo nel corso degli ultimi tempi, combinando influenze disco, funk e techno in una miscela esplosiva.
Il 2013 l'ha già visto in uscita su "Deep Shit" con l'Ep "LLama" accompagnato dal remix di Jack Savidge dei "Friendly Fires" e ricevendo consensi e supporto da gente del calibro di Andrew Weatherall, Daniel Avery e Erol Alkan.
Resident Dj al "The Nest" di Dalston, gira l'Europa con apparizioni ad Ibiza e in vari festival tra cui il "Bugged Out" e lo "Stop Making Sense", annuncia l'uscita del suo nuovo Ep su "Days Of Being Wild" intitolato "The Guanako Haka Ep".
La main track che da il nome all' Ep è una danza indigeno-metropolitana spinta da un basso che rimbalza e forte di influenze tipiche del suono americano dei vari Wolf + Lamb, Soul Clap e Tanner Ross, ma nell'insieme funziona e con l'accompagnamento dei vocalizzi tipici di una Haka degli All Black, non rimane così scontata e banale.
Purtroppo le altre due tracce che compongono questo progetto  suonano troppo digitali e sono poco accattivanti, ma i margini di miglioramento di questo ragazzo sono sicuramente alti quindi teniamolo d'occhio.

Trentemoller | Reworked/Remixed

Progetto ricco per uno dei pochi artisti che possono vantare a pieno titolo il ruolo di eredi dei vari Tangerine Dream, Klaus Schulze, Neu o Moebius. Come  per questi luminari della musica elettronica la visione "open mind" di Trentemøller fa la differenza sia quando crea la traccia, sia quando la remixa, percorrendo spesso strade diverse e non appoggiandosi  a canoni precostituiti - come spesso accade a molti sopravvalutati new comer della scena elettronica europea.

Ventidue tracce sono davvero tante per essere descritte tutte in un respiro: si tratta comunque di remixes del "nostro", più alcune tracce remixate da ospiti...strepitosi. Parliamo di nomi del calibro di Andrew Weatherall su Silver Surfer, Ghost Rider che fa rivisitazioni in chiave dark anni '80, Unkle che ribalta in chiave indie "Neverglade", brano presente anche nella bellissima versione strumentale originale e nel rmx dello stesso Trentemøller. Citiamo anche Kollectiv Turmstrasse con il remix di "Even though you’re with another girl", uno dei miei favoriti nei djset di quest'anno. Ma le belle scoperte non finiscono qui: c'è il rmx di Too Insistent/ Dw down tempo struggente e malinconico, "No you girl" dei Franz Ferdinand rivisto in chiave funk elettronica con il vocal opportunamente usato per esteso, "White Flash" di Modeselektor  - dove Trentemøller tira fuori il meglio dal suo repertorio di manipolatore dei suoni, "Me Me Me" di Lars and the Hands of Light - dai sapori sixties, chitarre a nastro, atmosfera glamour. Non poteva mancare "Wrong" dei Depeche Mode con il rmx di Trent assolutamente fantastico con un vortice di suoni deliranti, di gran lunga il migliore re-work di questo brano remixato da una valanga di...caproni.
Alla fine Reworked / Remixed è indubbiamente un package di alto spessore, ma manca all’appello qualche altra perla che ci aspettavamo…che arrivi prima o poi anche un volume Due? Lo speriamo.

What's going on | BY SEVERINO #6

Eccoci tornati all'appuntamento con la nostra rubrica da Londra, spero abbiate passato una bella estate! Torniamo nella movida parlando di alcuni locali interessanti come lo Xoyo: si trova dietro la stazione di Old Street che è una zona ora un po' troppo commerciale, e se ci passate di notte sarà facile vedere le solite scene di ubriacatura inglese doc, abbinata a mangiate di kebab e patatine o la solita coscia di pollo...mhmh non proprio uno show! Comunque il locale mantiene una buona qualità musicale, se pensate che a fine agosto James Murphy ha organizzato lì una festa per il 10° anniversario della mitica DFA. Da mettere in agenda c'è la situazione house old skool Junior Boy's Own, dove faranno un Halloween party con super sorprese ancora da svelare. Per chi cerca la tipica situazione basement inglese, il giovedì c'è A Love from Outer Space, padroneggiata da Sean Johnston e Andrew Weatherall al The Nest, nella super cool area di Dalston: la regola è che non si superi i 120bpm, decisamente interessante e molto trippy, proprio come il bravo Weatherall sa fare.
Siamo prossimi anche al 20° compleanno del Ministry of Sound in quel di Elephant and Castle, il weekend del 17 e 18 settembre. Ci saranno un sacco di old skool dj tra i quali anche il nostro Claudio Coccoluto, che una decina di anni fa suonava regolarmente alle serate Saturday del Ministry. Non resta che dire... Happy Birthday!

Musicalmente segnalo il progetto del grande Erol Alkan con i Boyz Noize, che fanno uscire su Phantasy record label una traccia (quasi un remake di un pezzo di Leonard Cohen) dal titolo di Avalanche (Terminal Velocity) con un super guest alla voce: Jarvis Cocker. Mi piace quando questi personaggi dance-rock si mischiano, nel complesso direi che settembre promette bene!
